10 Reasons to Switch From PC to Mac
By Kelly • Jul 15th, 2008 • Category: Featured Story
How many of you feel your PC is more and more frustrating everyday? Looking for driver updates, rebooting, and even getting blue screen experience? Then maybe it’s time for you to get an Apple Mac computer.
And for those of you who’ve been thinking of replacing PC to Mac but still hesitate on doing so, Here are some ideas to ease you in making that tough decision:
- Mac is ready to use out of the box
When you first get your Mac, the first thing you have to do is boot it up, enter one or two information about yourself and that’s it. Yes, PC is built in with operating system too. But unlike Mac, when you boot up a PC for the first time and complete the wizard, you need to install software and the famous gigantic patches.
- Mac GUI is intuitive
Mac OS has been built with high taste of art. Best in class. Widgets, mini applications, built in RSS reader and a unique touch styled system to control application which hasn’t been replicated by PC yet.
- Mac is less susceptible from virus
Mac is not a virus free operating system but believe me, it’s far more virus hassle free than PC. It’s UNIX modular kernel and layered security has proven to be difficult to attack. And I don’t have to tell you how many virus, spyware and malware for PC are out there. But just by knowing that there are tons of patches and anti virus updates you have to install after installing Windows, gives you proof.
- Easy to install Mac
It’s easy to install Mac OS. Apple has created an easy way for users who want to install Mac by themselves without the support of a corporate IT department. And Mac doesn’t look ugly in the living room.
- Mac OS run Windows
If you are PC user by life, then you might want to use Boot Camp on Mac temporarily until you are sure and confidence with Mac.
- Mac comes with built in apps and tools
Application such as iLife in Mac gives you a bundle of software to do projects with photo, music, video, and make websites, photo books, DVD, songs, sideshows, music CDs, calendars, cards, prints, podcast, music videos, documentaries, and many more.
- Mac can run application such as Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop
Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop are only a few application suites among many that available for Mac. So don’t worry, you can still exchange word document with your colleagues.
- Excellent after sales service from Apple
Let’s face it, more and more people want a reliable computer and they are willing to pay a small premium amount for the easiness, reliability and the beautiful design. But should they encounter any problems with their Mac, Apple service is ready to help.
- Price is now even cheaper than PC
Back in the old days, not everyone can buy Mac. But today, the price drops almost lower than the price of PC. The latest high end computer — say in $2,000 range — is now the same price with high end MacBook Pro computer.
- Stylish design
From MacBook to MacBook Air to iMac, they are all designed by Apple engineers to meet the world class industrial standard. Beautiful, stylish and elegant. That’s everyone, an Apple Mac computer!

Those are some pretty good points, but I still prefer a PC

Good list, but you’ll never get me to switch. Never, I say. Never!
But, I’ve been a Mac user for 17 years, so switching would be bad.

After 15 years working with a mac, I decided now to make a cut and from now on, the only thing that counts for me is to support and work with open source software, whereever possible.
Apple and especially the iPhone System with the new AppStore does NOT represent the freedom to decide what’s best for me and use the tools I like best.
The only systems that’s fits my personal idea of freedom is Linux and it comes with all the tools I need for my business and if necessary, I can easily be part of the developing community, so the apps will be more what I want them to be for my needs.
Sorry for my bad english, but I felt an urgent need to tell these thoughts, while everybody is blinded by the Apple hype in these days.

Open source enables us the IT techies to tailor what software we need and what we don’t need. We even can compile our own operating system if we like. But most of us users only want a computer that is fast, reliable and affordable ans we need to be sure that we can get the support when we find problems. Apple with its proprietary Mac is not perfect but less headache to maintain than PC.
Thanks for the advise

Yes, you can’t run windows like apps (.exe files) directly on Mac OS unless you want to use virtualization method (bootcamp). There are many MacOS applications from third parties you can buy from games to business apps as well. And I heard there are also cracked version of them

Some points in your list are false and/or they exist also in Windows. Lets go through them one by one:
1) Mac is ready to use out of the box
True but false, so is Windows (in most cases).
2) Mac GUI is intuitive
False. GUI is not that intuitive. GUI has been almost the same for as long as there have been Macs. I personally think that Windows’s GUI is just as intuitive as Mac’s. OS X just looks nicer.
3) Mac is less susceptible from virus
True!
4) Easy to install Mac
True but false. So is Vista, XP ain’t so easy.
5) Mac OS runs Windows
True, but Windows runs Windows too.
6) Mac comes with built in apps and tools
True but false. Vista comes with similar set of apps too
7) Mac can run applications such as Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop
True but false. So can Windows. So is this really the reason to switch to Mac?
Hadn’t have any problems yet so can’t say much about this, so lets assume: true!
9) Price is now even cheaper than PC
False, PC is cheaper. You can get a fully functional PC with under $500 and still manage to browse the web and read your emails. I’m not saying that you should buy a $499 PC (you really shouldn’t unless you really need it) but comparing prices in high-end computers just ain’t the right way to go.
10) Stylish design
True! But some manufacturers are making really stylish PC casings but nevertheless most manufacturers’ out-of-the-box PCs looks like cr*p.
I have to note that I’m a switcher but my reasons weren’t actually the ones listed above, but that’s another post…

@Jari -
I have included my response below.
Jari, thanks for the thorough comments
1) Mac is ready to use out of the box
True but false, so is Windows (in most cases).
My response: Yes, Windows is pre-installed out of the box but it’s not ready to use yet. We need to patch them. Windows XP is now on SP3. Vista patches are smaller but still requires us to download around 128 patches before we can use it.
2) Mac GUI is intuitive
False. GUI is not that intuitive. GUI has been almost the same for as long as there have been Macs. I personally think that Windows’s GUI is just as intuitive as Mac’s. OS X just looks nicer.
My response: Yes OS X looks better even compare to Vista. So maybe it will have different opinion for every person.
3) Mac is less susceptible from virus
True!
My response: I agree with you
4) Easy to install Mac
True but false. So is Vista, XP ain’t so easy.
My response: I agree with you that Vista is now easy to install.
5) Mac OS runs Windows

True, but Windows runs Windows too.
My response: Ha ha. Yeah. Definitely
6) Mac comes with built in apps and tools
True but false. Vista comes with similar set of apps too
My response: I agree with you for Vista.
7) Mac can run applications such as Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop
True but false. So can Windows. So is this really the reason to switch to Mac?
My response: Not really the major reason to switch, but we’ve been used to apps like Office and Photoshop, etc and that would be one of the reason people reluctant to switch OS.
Excellent after sales service from Apple
Hadn’t have any problems yet so can’t say much about this, so lets assume: true!
My response: Yeah. Again, even the great service will once in a while has to face on bumpy road
My response: As a have wrote in the post, not everyone can buy Mac some years ago. But now the price has dropped. From the $500 Mac Mini to the $1,300 starting price of Mac Book. So Mac system is more affordable now. PC on the other hand has a very wide range of price from $400 net book system to say $3,000 high end system with different level of build quality. With Mac, the level of build quality is kept on every price range which is not seen on PC.
10) Stylish design
True! But some manufacturers are making really stylish PC casings but nevertheless most manufacturers’ out-of-the-box PCs looks like cr*p.
My response: I couldn’t agree more.
